This is the stuff you roll in.

I was born in the Panama Canal Zone in 1974 (just like John McCain!). I was a dual citizen until I was 18 when I declared myself a US citizen. My birth certificate is in Spanish. Very few other things in my life are.

My father was a career military officer, graduating from West Point in 1968 and moving every two to three years after that, through 1992 when he retired from active duty and now serves this great land of ours as the Dean of a military Staff College in northern Virginia. Along the way of all those moves, he got married, had some kids, and kept moving. Following my birth in Panama, we moved to North Carolina where Dad did his grad work at Duke. We then went to West Point, NY; Fort Bragg, NC; Heidelberg, Germany; Ft. Leavenworth, KS; West Point, NY; and finally Fredericksburg, VA.

I continued the moving ways, going out to South Bend for college at a small, Catholic school in the northern part of the state. I graduated in 1996, spent the following year in South Bend playing in a band called George and the Freeks. I moved to Silver Spring, MD in 1997 and lived with some kool kats and played in a band called Hoobajoob. I met my future wife on July 1, 1997. It was a Tuesday. I wore a beat up Phish t-shirt with cargo shorts and Doc Martens with no socks. She should have known better.

We moved back to South Bend in 2001, got married, one of us went through law school while the other worked, got laid off, temped, then landed a sweet job with his alma mater.

I was in New York City on September 11, 2001, having flown in the evening of September 10, 2001 to take a class with my former employer. Fortunately, I also rented a car on September 10, when automobiles were abundant and readily available at any rent-a-car place. I drove from NY to IN on Thursday, September 13, 2001, crying most of the way. I'm mostly better now.

I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2003, finishing in four hours, twenty nine minutes, thirty four seconds. I ran the Detroit Marathon in October 2005, finishing in three hours, fifty minutes, twenty nine seconds.

After seaves finished law school, we moved to Lansing, MI, and then later to East Lansing, MI, where I currently ride my bike to and from work.

We added to our family in 2006 with the birth of our first child. Parenthood has changed a lot about our lives, almost all of it for the better.
