Quick update: conference, bitten tongue, in laws, grad school

On Friday I went to Novi for a "drive in" get together of the regional professional association of which I am a member. Four of us from the office went and everything was cruising along fine until I checked my messages. Drew had tripped on a toy and smacked his face on a table, biting through his tongue. Anytime someone that provides care for someone you love starts off a voicemail message with, "It's not an emergency, but we need you to call us..." it's never a good sign.

So Claire was in touch with them a bunch throughout the day. It bled a lot and he was pretty miserable most of yesterday. They gave him some Tylenol and we gave him some ibuprofen, and that seemed to help with the swelling and the pain. Drew also got to eat ice cream and a popsicle for dinner. He seemed pleased. With the ibuprofen kicked in he was pretty funny because he was drooling like mad, but otherwise unaffected.

It looks disgusting, though. Today we've gotten him to open his mouth and stick out his tongue a bit and wow. Thank God he's missing a couple of his teeth still or he'd be missing the last 1/4 inch of his tongue. I feel terrible for him. He's continuing a long McKenna family tradition, though. When I was 3, I fell off our porch at West Point, bit through my tongue, and ran around bleeding profusely before they could calm me down. The babysitter had to deliver me, covered with blood, to the house where my parents were guests of honor at some welcoming thing. I got to eat ice cream and popsicles then, too. And see? My tongue turned out just fine.

Claire's Dad and Robin were here Thursday and Friday. They brought Peanut and Drew couldn't have been more excited about having a dog in the house. He was very gentle with her and we took some pictures with them together...Drew very excited and Peanut looking like she'd rather be somewhere else. Perfect.

I am "currently" working on a research proposal for my class that's due tomorrow. I've overthought it and underwritten it...the worst possible combination. And now I'm procrastinating, which is equally awful because it's the first nice day of the spring...60 and sunny. I'm going to finish it today so that we can have family outside time tomorrow when it's supposed to be a little more cloudy but slightly warmer. I mean, I'm going to finish it today if I stop posting on livejournal. Right now, it's a toss up.
