So I taped my very first television show today. Hopefully it won't be my last. It was an incredibly surreal experience. The studio itself was nicer than I thought it would be, considering it's PBS and everything. Everyone was super nice and I got set up and warmed up with no problems. I was kindof early to get a good sound check, but then I just kindof hung out, so when they gave me the "5 minutes to your segment" thing I sortof freeked out. Then the count down from "20 seconds," "10 seconds," "in five, four, three, two..." and then I started playing. Good times.
I played Bonner Mead, then they did a litte interview with me, and then I played Good-bye. I screwed up a chord in Bonner Mead, which is funny because I told Claire that I didn't need to practice it since I'd played it 7 million times. And my mouth was soooooo dry it was tough to get my lips to move in order to form the words. And I said a bunch of stupid things in the interview section, too. I'm not really looking forward to seeing it. I can't remember anything that I said, but I remember standing there thinking to myself, "I don't think this is going well...you sound dumb." So I'm sure there'll be nuggets of idiocy all around. But by the time I started playing Good-bye, I was pretty calm (except for the incredibly dry throat and mouth) so I tried to relax and enjoy it.
The other crazy thing about it is that there were three cameras, and regardless of whether the camera was on (the red light) or not, I could see what the camera was seeing. So right in front of me, I had pictures of me from panned out, a tight close-up of my face, and a shot of me strumming my guitar. It was a little difficult to concentrate with all the distractions.
But everybody clapped, and Claire said that I sounded good, so I'm hoping I won't have to hunt down and burn each and every copy of the show. :-)
